Your metric should directly relate to your assumption. If you’re testing messaging effectiveness, track response rates or meeting booking rates, not final conversion rates that depend on dozens of other variables.
The best metrics reveal customer behaviour rather than just outcomes. You’re trying to understand how your market responds to specific changes, not just whether you hit an arbitrary target.
4. Set Your Success Threshold

Start small instead. Find the minimum viable sample size that can give you a meaningful signal. For most B2B sales experiments, that’s surprisingly small. Often, 30-50 prospects suffice for initial tests, maybe 100 if you’re testing something with naturally lower response rates.
The point isn’t statistical perfection. This is about learning quickly and cheaply enough that you can afford to be wrong. If your experiment shows promise in a small sample, you can expand it. If it fails, you’ve lost days instead of months and preserved most of your market for the next test.
This approach also accelerates your learning velocity. Instead of running one big experiment per quarter, you can run one per week or even multiple simultaneous tests on different aspects of your sales process.
